George Russell left the team after a three-year stint to take up Bottas’ seat at Mercedes. Coming in to replace him was Alex Albon, on loan from Red Bull, who was announced along with retaining Latifi in the previous September.

Albon got his time with the team off to a great start in the third round in Australia. The Thai driver started last after he was disqualified from qualifying after the required one-litre fuel sample could not be extracted from his car during post-qualifying scrutineering. In the race, Albon started on hard compound tyres and then went 57 laps on these before making his mandatory stop on the penultimate lap coming home to bag 9th position and a valuable point.

A major weakness of the FW44 was that while it was quick in a straight line it lacked downforce making it troublesome at circuits with slow corners. Monza, Italy had been identified as somewhere the car was likely to shine and a chance to score points. Albon had taken part in the Friday practice sessions but by Saturday morning was feeling unwell with what transpired to be appendicitis. Reserve driver Nyck de Vries was drafted in and went on to score a hard fought 9th place securing two more points for the team and plaudits for the Dutchman.

There was much speculation during the year on the position of Nicholas Latifi with all eyes on Williams junior Logan Sargeant who had been on improving form in F2 and took part in a number of FP1 sessions in order to boost his chances of gaining the required super licence points. This was confirmed in November after the required points were secured. Albon had already been signed up on a multi-year deal announced in August cutting his ties with Red Bull at the same time.

After only a couple of years with the team, it was announced in December that both FX Demaison and Jost Capito were to leave meaning, once more, the team were on the hunt for someone to lead both the technical direction and the team as a whole.
