With Nigel Mansell having departed for Ferrari Belgium Thierry Boutsen is drafted in from Benetton as his replacement.
Ricardo Patrese remains for another season.
Gone though is the Judd V8 to be replaced by the new Renault V10 fitted in the back of FW12c and, later in the season, FW13.
In June Renault announce that they are to continue sole-supply of their engines to Williams in 1990. The announcement coincides with the first win for Renault’s engine and Boutsen in Canada.
Williams and Boutsen were to win only one further race at the season closing Australian Grand Prix.
