The Autosport International show is used to announce new Touring Car signing, Jean-Christophe Boullion, formally the WilliamsF1 test driver.
Alex Zanardi joins the team with a number of championship wins to his name in IndyCar but struggled to get to grips with the modern day F1 car from day one.
After disappointment in 1998 the BMW/Williams Le mans project returns with a new car the BMW V12 LMR. This wins on it’s debut at Sebring. The team then went on to win at Le Mans in June with Joachim Winkelhock, Pierluigi Martini, and Yannick Dalmas driving.
Having already announced that they were to power Williams in F1 in 2000 BMW pulls the plug on the Le Mans project to concentrate on F1.
19th September – the last outing for the Williams Touring Car team. Jason Plato ensures that the team goes out with a bang – if not a win.
